Executive Director
The Executive Director works in partnership with the FNWACCB board to provide leadership and direction to ensuring fulfillment of FNWACCB’s mission and the achievement of its vision and strategic goals as the national certification board for Aboriginal Addictions counsellors.
The Executive Director is responsible and accountable for all aspects of operations for the organization including leadership, management, evaluation of strategies, activities, systems and staffing related to certification standards, recruitment of certification applicants, building and maintaining partner and stakeholder relationships, communication and media relations, establishing standards for education and training programs, courses and workshops acceptable for front line worker training, and for establishing reciprocity agreements with other certification bodies.
Reporting to the Board of Directors the Executive Director will be responsible for:
- Collaborating with the Board of Directors to develop a strategic plan and then developing the strategies for implementing and achieving them
- Managing and overseeing the implementation of FNWACCB’s national counselor certification strategy.
- Operating the organization within a budget that enables achievement of the board’s vision and strategic goals while fulfilling the organization’s existing obligations.
- Developing and implementing, in collaboration with the Board of Directors, a long-term financial strategy that enables the organization to be financially self-sustaining.
- Developing and presenting to the board an annual work-plan that sets out goals, objectives, strategies and outcomes
- Representing the FNWACCB on matters relating to standards, policies, and interpretations and rulings pertaining to certification.
- Keeping under review new developments in all fields relevant to FNWACCB responsibilities and makes recommendations to its Board of Directors.
- Working with the Registrar/Director of Standards to ensure that certification standards meet or exceed the requirements for reciprocity.
- Ensuring that FNWACCB’s certification and its benefits for frontline workers and treatment centres is well known to its target population; the application process is easily accessible to addictions workers, and that the processing of applications is timely, transparent and fair.
- Establishing and maintaining a respectful, cooperative and collaborative relationship with FNWACCB’s major funder’s and ensuring full compliance with any and all requirements in funding agreements.
- Ensuring that FNWACCB’s certification process and standards recognize and reflect the history, traditions, cultural and territorial relevance and differences of all Indigenous peoples.
- Manages and oversees the implementation of a communications strategy designed to address recruitment, stakeholder relationships and information dissemination to registrants, potential applicants and employers.
- Ensure the integrity of the organization’s internal control and management systems and protect its public image
- Direct and monitor the activities of the organization in a manner that ensures its assets are safeguarded and optimized in the best interests of the organization and the persons it exists to serve.
- Identify the principal risks that could be faced by the organization and ensure the implementation of systems to manage these risks
- Hire, manage, supervise, evaluate and if necessary terminate the employment of staff within approved budgetary parameters
- Develop and implement operational policies necessary for the effective and efficient operation of the organization
- Establish and maintain an annual board approved plan for the development and succession of senior management
- In collaboration with the board, develop and implement plans and strategies for communicating and building relationships with key stakeholders.
- Ensure that the President and the Board are provided with relevant and timely information regarding material issues.
- Foster an organizational culture that promotes ethical practices and encourages individual integrity and social responsibility
- Seek board approval for expenditures, revenue measures, leases or other actions and transactions falling outside the guidelines and policies approved by the board
- Work with the board of directors to lead and direct the organization and to assist it with governance and board development, where needed
- Hires, orients, trains, evaluates and supports the FNWACCB staff according to policy and set the direction for all human resource development; anticipates overall staffing needs and provides for the development of competencies needed for the delivery of the Certification Process.
- Works with the Registrar to assess and determine if an accredited educational institution's addictions courses meet the standards of the certification body so that addictions workers in all jurisdictions have equal access to recognized/certified addictions training/educational opportunities.
- In collaboration with the Registrar/Director of Standards designs a strategic plan to engage and build partnerships with accredited educational institutions across the country.
- Works to increase awareness about FNWACCB and to increase the availability of culturally sensitive addictions courses and training opportunities that are accredited by FNWACCB.
- Works with the Registrar/Director of Standards to develop certification standards, testing, certification application packages, promotions, programs, partnerships with educational institutions, and media relations to ensure consistency in operations.
- In concert with the Registrar/Director of Standards liaises with educational institutions and organizations on matters relating to curriculum that is acceptable for FNWACCB accreditation.
- Ensures the development and maintenance of a current and comprehensive catalog of all FNWACCB partnerships with educational institution that provide education programs which meet the requirement for the 12 core international functions of an addictions counsellor.
- Supervises all media relations including press releases concerning noteworthy events relating to the FNWACCB, its programs, and its personnel, including regular promotion, news releases, media coverage and correspondence.
- Works with the Web Designer on the FNWACCB website.
- Performs other duties as requested by the Board of Directors.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
- Five years demonstrated competence and experience in successfully managing a non-profit organization.
- Demonstrated experience in building partnerships with other organizations, in financial management, marketing, promotion and media relations.
- Proven record of successful management experience in a people-oriented environment.
- Demonstrated initiative and a self-starter.
- Bachelors Degree in Business Management and asset.
- Proficiency in the use of PCs and the Office suite of programs.
- Indigenous ancestry preferred
- Bilingual proficiency (French and English) an asset
- Vehicle and valid drivers license

Registrar/Director of Standards
The First Nations Wellness/Addictions Certification Board, Canada’s aboriginal addictions counselor certification body is seeking a Registrar/Director of Standards to further develop, manage and administer our certification process, and establish partnerships with educational institutions and training organizations throughout Canada.
Qualifications: Master’s Degree in a discipline related to the work; a background in the addictions field; five years related work experience; considerable experience in curriculum and course development, testing, the process of certification as well as demonstrated experience in working with First nations organizations and bands.
Indigenous ancestry is preferred and bilingual competency (English and French) is an asset.

Registrar/ Director of Standards
POSITION SUMMARY:
This position reports to the Executive Director. The Registrar/Director of Standards is the resident expert on Certification of Addictions Workers. This position is responsible for reviewing all applications for certification and recertification, ensuring that candidate applications meet the standards for certification, and for making the decision regarding whether to grant or deny certification, as well as determining the level of certification to be granted.
Together, the Registrar/Director of Standards and the Executive Director will develop and implement a strategy for working with educational institutions and training organizations to identify, develop and grant the FNWACCB designation to wellness and addictions programs, courses and workshops suitable to FNWACCB certification requirements.
The Registrar/Director of Standards must be familiar with all types of training, job descriptions and programming available to frontline workers throughout Canada that would be considered relevant and applicable to the education requirements of the Certification Process.
This position has primary responsibility for supervising the Assistant Registrar and secondary responsibility for overseeing the general work of the Administrative Assistant and specific responsibility for managing the Administrative Assistants work in the certification application process. Coordinate and invigilates candidate examinations, verifies candidate eligibility for certification, and approves candidate certification.
Responsibilities:
- Establishes, maintains and oversees the certification standards, application processes, and course and training curriculum for courses that are considered suitable for certification
- Keeps current knowledge of new developments in all fields relevant to the applicant responsibilities and makes recommendations to the Executive Director.
- Is responsible for working with universities, colleges and CGEPS and other education and training organizations that offer programs, courses or training events relevant to enhancing the knowledge and skills of indigenous addictions workers.
- Ensures the necessary high standards of service delivery in an efficient and effective manner.
- Manages FNWACCB applicant records to ensure the maintenance of service quality.
- Registers and maintains custody, confidentiality and security of applicant files, certificates, and other relevant documents.
- Is responsible for all applicant procedures for certification, and, based on existing standards and criteria approves or denies applications for certification.
- Makes available to any agency or individual with consent of the applicants information the applicants want released.
- Assist board and/or committees in matters relating to appeals, complaints and discipline, ensuring that they have the necessary information to conduct their business .
- Gives direction to and supervises the work of the Assistant Registrar
- Coordinates certification examination scheduling, room booking and invigilation assignments for examinations.
- Issues and signs certificates granting the designation of Indigenous Certified Addictions Specialist level I, II, and III to successful candidates.
- Coordinate notification to certified Counsellors of pending certification expiry one-hundred and twenty days (120) prior to expiry.
- Updates examination study guides, certification examinations and application packages.
- Conducts investigations, with due process, for consideration and ruling by the FNWACCB of written complaints by the public of alleged misconduct by candidates or certified counsellors.
- Conducts investigations of violations of FNWACCB’s Code of Ethics.
- Perform other duties as may be required by the Board and the Executive Director.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
- Masters Degree in relevant discipline and 5 years related work experience.
- Demonstrated experience in working with First nations organizations and bands.
- Possess knowledge and understanding of First Nations history, culture, and community dynamics
- Demonstrated senior management experience.
- Strong oral and written communication.
- Excellent organization and record keeping skills.

Executive Director
The First Nations Wellness/Addictions Certification Board (FNWACCB), Canada’s aboriginal addictions counselor certification body is seeking an Executive Director to lead the organization in its next phase of growth and development.
The FNWACCB provides relevant certification and training for aboriginal addictions counsellors and establish standards for certification and training relevant to traditional First Nations’ healing philosophy and comparable accepted standards in the addictions field. Our certification process and standards acknowledges and gives credit for aboriginal workers culture, knowledge, and skills.
The Executive Director will work with aboriginal addictions organizations throughout Canada to encourage and promote certification of aboriginal addictions counsellors, and to substantially increase the number of certified aboriginal addictions counsellors serving aboriginal communities. In addition, he/she will collaborate and partner with educational institutions and training organizations to ensure aboriginal addictions workers have access to relevant and appropriate addictions related education and training.
The ideal candidate will be a proven collaborator and partnership builder with substantial experience in marketing and promotion, financial management, managing staff, liaising with government officials, and working with a board of directors.
The successful candidate will have five years demonstrated competence and experience in successfully managing a non-profit organization; have a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management or Marketing; and, a proven track record of being an initiator and self-starter.
A candidate of Indigenous ancestry is preferred.
Bilingual proficiency (English and French) is an asset for this position.

Administrative Assistant
The First Nations Wellness/Addictions Certification Board is Canada’s aboriginal addictions counselor certification body. We are seeking an individual of indigenous ancestry for the position of Administrative Assistant to work with our Executive Director and Registrar. Duties include initial processing of applications for review by the Registrar, phone answering, responding to queries from applicants, booking travel arrangements, mailing of certificates, making bank deposits, preparation of cheques for signing, record keeping and other general office & administrative duties.
Applicants must have an Applied Business Technology Diploma or Office Administration Certificate plus 5 years work experience in a similar position; be competent in the use of all applications in the Microsoft Office Suite; be capable of working with minimal supervision; and, be fluently bilingual in English and French (spoken and written).
This is a full time position working in our office in Vancouver, British Columbia.
The start date for this position is February 1, 2011.

Administrative Assistant
This position reports to the Executive Director of the First Nations Wellness/Addictions Certification Board with a secondary reporting relationship to the Registrar/Director of Standards regarding applicant certification records.
Subject to its policies and procedures; the main duties of the Administrative Assistant position is to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of a secretary/receptionist, coordinate and oversee the administrative functioning of the National Office of FNWACCB, handle and process queries regarding certification application and assist in the organization, management, and recordkeeping related to the Registry of Applicants for Certification. Completes all aspects of file procedures for incoming applicants; liaises with community front line and Treatment Centre Addictions workers.
RESPONSIBILITIES:- Works in coordination with the Executive Director and Registrar/Director of Standards to ensure that all administrative functions are carried out.
- Maintains filing system, answer telephone calls and emails
- Implement and adhere to the policies and practices regarding processing of applications for certification
- Practices and enforces discretion and confidentiality with respect to applicants, personnel, finance files and information.
- Provides general secretarial/reception duties including: word-processing letters, organize minutes and take meeting notes at staff and BOD meetings, incoming calls/distribution, incoming mail/distribution, sales, administration receipts, maintaining the appointment calendars of the Executive Director and the Registrar/Director of Standards, and organizing any meetings needed for the certification process.
- Follows practices set out by FNWACCB’s bookkeeping service regarding revenue and expenditures and keeping of receipts, invoices, and payments
- Maintains and operates Access database of applicants and certified counsellors
- Performs duties of purchasing
- Assists Executive Director with quarterly and annual reports, letters etc.
- Maintains administrative and information records and correspondence in both the filing system and the computer
- Assists with administrative needs of the Executive Director and Registrar/Director of Standards to ensure that they are met in an efficient and effective manner
- Responsible for upkeep and operation of all office equipment and computers
REQUIREMENTS:
- Applied Business Technology Diploma, Office Administrative Certificate, or equivalent education and experience.
- Five years experience in a similar position, with proficiency in ACCESS, Word, Excel/Spreadsheet, PowerPoint, accessing the Internet and utilizing e-mail programs.
- Post-secondary education in office administration, information systems management and controls.
- Excellent communication skills in dealing with candidates for certification, staff, and the general public.
- If in recovery from an addiction the candidate must be willing to abide by our Wellness policy.
