Specific qualifications, training and experience requirements for Indigenous Certified Addictions Specialist I

 

 

First Nations Wellness/Addictions Counsellor Certification Board

To be awarded certification as an Indigenous Certified Addictions Specialist I the applicant must possess the qualifications below:

 

Level of education High School Diploma or GED.
Training/Continuing education Core functions 120 hours
Addiction-related subjects/topics 120 hours
Experience One-year full time paid work experience as an addictions counselor in an aboriginal addictions program or treatment centre. 2000 hours
REQUIRED ADDICTIONS-RELATED SUBJECTS/TOPICS

The 120 hours of training/continuing education in the required subjects/topics can include courses, workshops, seminars, or on-the-job training provided by an external trainer or educational organization, as well as formal education where the course emphasis is on counselling the chemically dependent individual and family or training in specialized alcohol/drug courses.

Required addiction-related subjects/topics (in addition to the 12 core functions):

  • Knowledge of addictions/chemical dependency
    • Introduction to addictions/chemical dependencies
    • Physiological and pharmacological aspects
    • Psychological dependencies and complications
    • Sociocultural value and attitudinal systems
  • Communications
  • Professional integrity/professional Ethics
  • Cultural competency
  • Analytical Skills

Other training/continuing education topics which will be accepted as part of the required training/continuing education hours must include courses directly related to addictions and/or that provide the knowledge and skills included in the General knowledge and experience requirements for all levels (see more detailed list in annex 1):

  • HIV/AIDS (optional, but recommended)
  • Group Facilitation Skills
  • Interviewing approaches and techniques
  • Collaborative Skills
  • Conflict management
  • Family dynamics
  • Grief work
  • FASD
  • Trauma work
  • Residential School and intergenerational trauma
  • Suicide
  • Relapse Prevention
