Specific qualifications, training and experience requirements for Indigenous Certified Addictions Specialist III

 

 

First Nations Wellness/Addictions Counsellor Certification Board

To be awarded certification as an Indigenous Certified Addictions Specialist III the applicant must possess the qualifications below:

 

Education A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in the health or human services fields from an accredited college or university.
Training

Some degrees do not  include all the subjects/topics required for level I (ICAS I), and level II (ICAS II),

In this case, to be certified for level III (ICAS III), applicants must demonstrate they have taken training/continuing education required for level I and II.

You must demonstrate that you have the required number of hours in the following topics:

 
  1. Alcohol and Drug related education* (see list of topics listed for level I)

280 hours*

  1. Specific Ethics training

6 hours

  1. HIV/AIDS training
6 hours
*274 hours if you have already taken HIV/AIDS training)  

Training/continuing education in the 12 core functions*

*These 120 hours must consist of 10 hours for each of the 12 core functions
120 hours*
NOTE: If your degree did not include the required 12 core functions hours (or only some of them) you must provide evidence that you have taken other training/continuing education satisfying the 10 hours requirement for each core function.

Additional Requirements

An Indigenous Certified Addictions Specialist II should possess the following qualifications in addition to those general qualifications and competencies already enumerated.

  1. Ability to speak knowledgeably on First Nations alcohol/drug problems.
  2. Knowledge of different Counselling philosophies and theories related to First Nations healing and recovery practices.
  3. Ability to coordinate, manage and facilitate continuance of treatment within the Treatment Center delivery system.
  4. Ability to assess the effectiveness of various treatment and program modalities as they apply to First Nations clients and their families
Experience Five years experience as paid full time employment addictions counselor 6,000 hours

Please note the following:

  1. An Associate of Arts (AA) degree in Chemical dependency will reduce the work requirement by 1000 hours.
  2. A Bachelors degree with 30 semester hours or 40-quarter hours in Counselling courses will reduce work requirement by 2000 hours.
  3. A Masters or higher degree with 30 semester or 40-quarter hours in Counselling courses will reduce the work requirement by 4000 hours.
Practicum Supervised and documented practicum with a minimum of 10 hours in each of the 12 core functions. 300 hours
